At Authorize.net, we know how powerful payments can be in helping transform businesses. To support our customers, we want to share their stories.
We talked with Daniel Stanilonis, owner of Action Sport Optics LLC, to learn how he built his business and how Authorize.net helped him create seamless payment experiences that boost customer loyalty and protection his reputation.
Daniel was born and raised in Vermont. He lives an active outdoor lifestyle and enjoys all sports—especially winter sports. After working in the sporting goods industry for various manufacturers, he wanted to embark on his own journey—and Action Sport Optics LLC was born. He wanted to have his interests be an integral part of his business and saw a need for 100% niche focus on sport and lifestyle optics.
Authorize.net: How did you start this business?
Daniel: It’s been a very organic journey. The idea was born, I put a plan in place, and slowly brought it to life. I started the business with very little resources but a lot of knowledge of the sporting goods industry.
What makes your product/service unique?
We are 100% sport and lifestyle optics focused; it’s not an accessory or an afterthought for us, where it is for many of the major outdoor eCommerce companies. We do a lot of replacement lens business for industry-leading brands, in both sport focused sunglass frames and goggles for skiers and snowboarders. Our product knowledge & customer service is superior; customers can rely on us for real advice and answers to their questions. Our customers know that we go above and beyond with in-depth product descriptions that help them get the right products the first try.
What advice would you give someone starting their own business?
If you think you have enough startup capital, then double it! Be very calculating about what services you use and who you work with. Do your research, trust your gut feelings, and align yourself with people you can trust.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give yourself starting out?
I’d increase the amount of money I had to invest in my startup.
Has accepting online payments/services changed/grown your business?
Yes, we are an online company, so accepting online payments from a trusted leader like Authorize.net was essential.
How did you initially learn about Authorize.net and what has been your experience thus far?
I researched the leading credit card processor for online companies, one that would make customers feel like their private information would be secure and safe. Authorize.net was the clear answer.
What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur?
Grit, resiliency, and the ability to see through the haze.
Anything else you would like to share?
Being an entrepreneur can be very humbling and full of highs, lows, and challenges at every level. It’s not for everyone or the faint of heart, but it can be very rewarding at the same time.
